DOE Pathway: The Shortcut Breaking Nuclear's 'Chicken and Egg'
Valor Atomics CEO Isaiah Taylor reveals how a forgotten DOE pathway, reactivated by executive orders, is accelerating nuclear R&D.
How Nuclear Will Unlock Energy Abundance with Valar Atomics Founder Isaiah Taylor
With Sarah Guo, Isaiah Taylor, Jess · Sunday, July 5, 2026
This episode features Sarah Guo interviewing Isaiah Taylor, founder and CEO of Valor Atomics, about their work in developing scalable nuclear reactors. They discuss the historical reasons for the slowdown in nuclear energy, Valor's unique approach to rapid hardware iteration and manufacturing, their strategy for navigating the regulatory environment, and the potential for ultra-cheap nuclear energy to transform global society.
Key takeaways
- The nuclear industry's core regulatory slowdown stemmed from a 'chicken and egg' problem: needing operational data for approval, but needing approval to operate. Read more →
- Traditional nuclear reactors require continuous active cooling even after shutdown to manage "decay heat," which represents 5-6% of their operating power, creating meltdown risks as seen at 3M Island and Fukushima. Read more →
- Isaiah Taylor, CEO of Valor Atomics, argues that energy is the core input to human quality of life, citing historical shifts from agrarian to industrial societies as proof that cheaper energy unlocks new standards of living. Read more →
- Valor Atomics, led by Isaiah Taylor, measures its development speed using a "tick rate" framework, borrowed from video games, to track the time between significant system changes. Read more →
- Valor Atomics is disrupting the nuclear industry by shifting from bespoke, 'Lamborghini' designs to simple, manufacturable 'Toyota Camry' reactors designed for mass production. Read more →
