“So that's what we're thinking is that the emotional parts are not able to be divorced because the norphan system is not downscaled during REM sleep,” Poe warns. “And so that REM sleep serves to instead reinforce and in fact amplify the emotions because your your emotional system is up.”

Instead of waking up recovered, you re-encode the distress. You cement the negative emotional reaction straight into long-term memory.
